Pere Lachaise Cemetery

Although it is far from being the typical tourist attraction, you would be surprised to see how many people visit the Pere Lachaise Cemetery every year. This is partly due to the great number of historic and contemporary celebrities who have their final resting places here, and whose fans come in pilgrimage, lighting candles and bringing flowers. And better still, the admission is free, although maps and guided tours are sold.

Today, it is the largest (44 hectares) cemetery in Paris, but things weren’t always so “bright”. When it was opened, in 1804, due to the fact that the blessing of the ecclesiastic authorities wasn’t requested for the location, many ardent Catholics refused to be buried here.

However, in 1817, the remains of two famous French medieval lovers, Abelard and Heloise, were reburied in this cemetery, turning it into a “fashionable” place ever since.
Grave of Oscar Wilde

Honore de Balzac, Frederic Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Maria Callas, and Jim Morrison are just a few of the great personalities resting in peace here. Their funeral monuments are visited, admired and photographed by thousands of people every year. However, those who are not disturbed by the presence of the graves can also have a quiet picnic here, because there are a lot of places created especially for this purpose.

Situated on the Boulevard de Menilmontant, is it easily reached by subway, and there are several stations from where there is just a short walk: the Philippe Auguste station, near the main entrance, the Gambetta station, close to the section where Oscar Wilde’s grave is, and another one, named after the cemetery itself. No matter what route you choose, a visit to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery is a unique experience, in its own way.

Since we’re all about Paris on a budget, why not plan ahead and save money on extra costs such as a guided tour or cemetery map, but visiting the official cemetery web site here. You can search for the graves of the most famous
